What a powerful photographic exhibition. I'm not surprised you were moved.

I lived in Kitchener, Ontario when Canada's P4W Prison for Women was relocated to Kitchener from Kingston. There was an "Open House" for the community (as many in the community were opposed to having these "new neighbours"). My husband and I toured the facility and the "cottage-like" units that housed 6 or so female inmates in a homelike setting.

Two uniformed guards showed us around, but only one did the talking. At the end, it was revealed that the second woman (late 20's) was actually an inmate. They did this so we could relate to her in a different way. We were then allowed to ask her questions. She spoke so quietly, not meeting our eyes. She said she had learned to crochet in prison and she liked this facility better than P4W. I asked how much longer she would be there. The actual guard stepped in and said, "Unfortunately Sarah [not her real name] will be with us for a very long time." We understood then that she was likely in for murder. It was surreal to recall that she had been proud about learning to crochet. An eye-opener.

I wrote an article about this. Maybe I will post it on Medium. Thanks for reminding me about it, Rigo.
