Well, look at you with your snazzy blue cane! It's true, people do notice, and some even hold doors (perhaps fearing a metallic smackdown if they don't).
When I broke my back, I first had to use a walker, and later a cane. I found people were kinder when I used a cane than with the walker. A walker intrudes on space in aisles, etc. Some people actually look irritated when they see you approach. When I graduated to the cane, the occasional man actually raced over to open a door or assist with my packages. That hadn't happened in years! Now that I'm cane-free, I kind of miss it (the attention, not the cane). LOL
