The line where Gandhi mentions that future German generations would not be proud of the legacy Hitler is leaving behind really hits me. As a child I was sorry to know I was of German descent once I learned what Hitler had done to Jewish people. Because my maiden name was only one letter different, I was called Hitler on the playground, which hurt and shamed me. Sadly, even if Hitler had received Gandhi’s letters, I doubt he would have been persuaded. Neville Chamberlain was convinced he’d gotten through to Hitler and we all know how that ended.
