I read somewhere that, if you write and mail an actual letter to him (c/o his publisher), he tries to answer thoughtful letters (he replies via postcard). I got a response from him (several months later) after telling him that his latest book, Happy-Go-Lucky, got me through my otherwise miserable hospital stay. It wasn't just a "canned" response, either. He commented on the things I'd said. Cool guy.
