I certainly do wish him (and you) luck with this. My company did a major restructuring years ago and it was not good news for those of us 55+. The company is obliged to offer severance and their written proposal can be reviewed by a lawyer to see if it's fair, often that improves things. There is life after retirement if you can "reinvent" yourself, I know initially it's a blow. Good luck.
