Having had a parent who suffered from dementia, it is always a niggling worry. In addition to trying to exercise more frequently and eat better, I've heard that trying to learn new things (learn a language, learn to dance or attempt some new skill) helps the brain forge some new neural pathways. Even if we never excel in the new language or skill, making the brain try something new is apparently useful.
